No. 2: Crater (OR)
- - -
Analysis: Crater may have graduated its top runner in school history, Tyrone Gorze, but it would be a mistake to sleep on Crater in 2023.
With five returners back, including No. 1 Josiah Tostenson -- a high school junior with as much talent as Gorze -- this team could be dangerous far down the line.
They are the defending Oregon Class 5A champions, the winners of NXR Northwest and fourth-place finishers at NXN. The team's returning average of 15:31.79 is no. 3 in the nation, only behind Southlake Carroll and American Fork.
Crater also owns the fifth-best returning speed rating average in the country at 175.8.
Biggest Question: Can this experienced crew have one last hurrah?
Gorze's graduation will have some doubting whether this team is capable of its heights last year. But that would be a mistake. With three seniors and two juniors returning, the squad will be upperclassmen savvy. The question will be: Can they silence the doubters?
