Elijah Greer of Lake Oswego High School, just south of Portland, Oregon, shocked himself and his coach by running the fourth-fastest high school 800 at the US Junior National Championships in Columbus, Ohio on Saturday, June 21, 2008.

Greer won the event in 1:47.68, breaking the state high school record of Mike McGrath (2003 - 1:48.56) and setting a new U.S. national junior record.

"It was the most awesome race I've ever seen by a young runner," Greer's coach, Bob Williams, told Doug Binder of the Oregonian.

While meeting the provisional qualifying time for the U.S. Olympic Trials in Eugene starting later this week, Greer's time came after the qualifying deadline of June 15. Greer plans to run in the World Junior Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland, July 8-13, 2008.
