Mondo Duplantis Takes Second In Pole Vault At Prefontaine

Recent Lafayette (LA) graduate Mondo Duplantis finished second in the pole vault at the Prefontaine Classic on Friday in Eugene, Oregon, clearing 18 feet, 8.75 inches.

He finished behind American Sam Kendricks, who vaulted a winning mark of 19-0.75, and just ahead of a talented field that included Piotr Lisek (18-8.75), Pawel Wojciechowski (18-3) and Renaud Lavillenie (18-3).

This marked Duplantis' first return to an entirely professional field since the Texas Relays on March 31 when Duplantis set a then-World Junior record of 19-5.

Since then, Duplantis has upped that record, clearing 19-5 at the LHSAA State Outdoor Championships.

Duplantis, who is headed to Louisiana State University in the fall, is expected to compete in Diamond League competition this summer.
