A Look into the VSSAA League

Three league meets down and one to go within the VSSAA Zone!

The Vancouver Secondary Schools Athletic Association is the official organization overseeing all extracurricular sports leagues and activities for the 18 secondary schools within the Vancouver School Board. So far, over the course of the season, athletes have raced at Quilchena Park, Killarney and the Langara Golf Course. The final league meet is set to take place at Everett Crowley Park on October 18th and the Vancouver Season to Sky Zone Finals will take place on October 25th at Jericho Beach Park.With three meet complete let's take a look at what has been going on.

Grade 10 athlete, Kefira Kamara, of Charles Tupper has been showing off her fitness within the Junior Girls division, with wins at both Quilchena Park and Langara. Over 4.25km she ran a time of 17:47.9. She was the only competitor to dip under the 18 minute mark, with Taylor De Witt of Kitsilano coming in second with a time of 18:01.5. At Langara it was the same story, Kamara was the only runner to dip under the 24 minute mark over 5.4km. She won the race with a time of 23:26.21, with Ava Forsyth of Killarney following behind with a time of 24:04.56.

In the Senior Girls division, Delphine Gosselin, only in Grade 11, won the 4.25km race at Quilchena by over 30 seconds. She crossed the finish line in a time of 15:33.0, with Clare Goodison of Windermere placing second with a time of 16:06.0. Goodison took the win at Langara with a time of 21:07.94 on the 5.4km course. She showed her strength, winning the race by over a minute and a half. Livia Fatovic-Spurr was second with a time of 22.54.58.

As for the Junior Boys, in his first year of high school, Grade 8 athlete, Hozumi Taguchi of Churchill is making a name for himself. He ran the 4.25km course at Quilchena in a time of 16:18.4. His teammate from Churchill, Titus Reimer, followed closely behind, running 16:21.4. On the Langara Golf Course, Taguchi was edged out of the top spot by Alex Damm of Kitsilano who won the 5.4km course in 20:35.91.

Grade 12, Kai Martland took the win at the first league meet of the year running 13:58.2 over 4.25km. Lowell Solmes was second with a time of 14:33.7; however, Solmes took the victory in League Meet #3 with a time of 18:32.37 over the 5.4km course. Nico Stockwell was second with 18:48.79.
