USTFCCCA Release
NEW ORLEANS, La. --- University of Portland runner Lars Erik Malde was named to the Division I Cross Country All-Academic team on Monday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). The sophomore from Norway earned NCAA All-Region honors and was named to the WCC All-Academic team to finish off the 2010 cross country season.
Malde is majoring in Engineering Management and owns a 3.70 GPA.
A total of 56 student-athletes represent 42 institutions that compose the All-Academic honorees. Oklahoma led all schools with four honorees while Richmond, Villanova, and Wisconsin followed with three each. To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and have either earned USTFCCCA All-America status or finished in the NCAA region’s top 15 (or top 10 percent) in 2010.
Malde was the only non Pac-10 runner to be named to the All-Academic team from the NCAA Western Region. Chris Derrick and Elliott Heath of Stanford join Ben Engelhardt of Arizona State as the other Western Region representatives on the team.
