Vena tops national class record Feb 25, 2009

Sometimes there’s calm before the storm. And sometimes there’s just a storm and then the storm gets worse.  That was Morristown sophomore Nick Vena, blasting through the throwing circle like a bone-rattling thunder clap that got louder each time.

A Fountain of Speed Feb 25, 2009

The runner to her outside stumbled out the start and in a blink Columbus junior Whitney Fountain devoured her.  Then she tore down the back straightaway like a bullet and commanded the homestretch for herself. She grit her teeth for every hundredth of a second she would shave off her personal best.

Strehler wins mile at Eastern States Feb 24, 2009

Several scratches of the top entrants left Trinity's Barbara Strehler out in front in the girls' mile run at the Eastern States Championships on Tuesday night at the New York Armory to make her pursuit of a sub 5 mile tougher. In her final race of the year since she plays lacrosse in the spring, Strehler had to push the pace on her own and represented the state well to lead wire-to-wire in a 5:01.54 victory, which converts to a sub 5 minute 1600 meter time. Her next competitive race will not be until she is running for the University of Virginia next fall. The St. Christopher's boys also competed in New York as it was their first meet this season outside of their own indoor track facility. The private school state track champions turned in solid times in relays with a 1:31.74 in the 4x200, 3:28.28 in the 4x400, and 8:08.95 in the 4x800. St. Christopher's senior Alex James also had a good mark in the shot put of 54'7" for his third straight meet with a throw over 54 feet.

In the prelims of the 200 meter dash, Whitney Fountain of Christopher Columbus put herself ontop of the national leaderboard with a New York state junior class record clocking of 23.77. The state of New Jersey nearly had a trade of control for the 400 national leader spot as junior Amber Allen from Passaic County High School was only three hundredths of a second away from a US #1 performance (Nijgia Snapp NJ 55.33) in the 400 meter dash with her 55.35 win in a close race against Colonie NY freshmen Kyle Plante (55.44). Bobby Andrews had a solid double in the distance races with victories in the mile run (US #6 4:12.31) and 2 mile run (9:21.34). The Southern Regional girls came back later to score another victory in the 4x800 meter relay (9:13). Despite a fall on their third leg, the Morris Hills boys of New Jersey were able to run just off their US leading time in the 4x800 meter relay with a time of 7:47.81. In the 4x200 meter relay, Middle College posted a US #6 time of 1:29.36 with a relay which featured US 300 leader Jermaine Brown, who claimed first place in the 55 meter dash with a 6.31 clocking in the finals.
