Hasay Named Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year

LOS ANGELES -- Oregon's Jordan Hasay and Arizona State's Nick Happe and were named the Pac-12 Men's and Women's Track & Field Scholar-Athletes of the Year, as announced by the Conference. The award, which is presented in each of the 22 sports the Conference sponsors, was established to honor collegiate student-athletes that are standouts both academically and in their sports discipline.

Hasay of Arroyo Grande, Calif., is a 17-time All-American, a four-time Pac-12 Champion and two-time NCAA Champion. She set the Pac-12 10,000-meter record (32:06.64) earlier this season. Hasay is a two-time Academic All-American and was named the 2011 USTFCCCA Academic All-American of the Year. She was a Bowerman Award semifinalist in 2011, as well. Addtionally, she earned All-American status in cross country three times and placed in the top three at the NCAA cross country championships the last three years.

A business administration major with a 3.87 GPA, Hasay was the first sophomore to be named National Women's Track & Field/Cross Country Academic All-American of the Year by the USTFCCCA in 2011. Hasay was also the Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year in cross country.

A native of St. Charles, Mo., Happe is the Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the second time this season after earning the honor in cross country, as well. He is the only individual in school history to post top-five marks indoors in the mile, 3,000 meters and 5,000 meters. He holds the school record in the mile (3:58.73) and 3,000 meters (7:52.18) and clocked the fourth-fastest 1,500-meter time in school history at the Sun Angel Classic in a time of 3:42.78, a time that currently ranks in the top-30 nationally in one of the nation's most stacked events. Happe is a two-time second team All-American in indoor track and a two-time All-West Region runner in cross country, having done so for the second time this past fall.

A CoSIDA third-team Academic All-American last season, Happe was an Academic All-Pac-12 first team member three times in cross country and twice in track and field. He has also been named to the USTFCCCA All-Academic team in the past two seasons. Happe currently maintains a 4.08 GPA in accountancy with a minor in psychology and is a member of Barrett, The Honors College. He was recently accepted into a prestigious business program at Notre Dame.

In order to be eligible for the Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year award, student-athletes must be a senior (in athletics eligibility) on track to receive a degree, have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher, participate in at least 50 percent of the scheduled contests in the sport and have a minimum one year in residence at the institution. Each Pac-12 institution may nominate one individual per sport, and the winners are selected by a committee of Pac-12 staff members at the conclusion of each sport's regular season. The athletics accomplishments of the nominees are a consideration in voting for the award.

A Scholar-Athlete of the Year will be named in each of the Pac-12's 22 sponsored sports: baseball, men's basketball, women's basketball, men's cross country, women's cross country, football, men's golf, women's golf, women's gymnastics, men's rowing, women's rowing, men's soccer, women's soccer, softball, men's swimming & diving, women's swimming & diving, men's tennis, women's tennis, men's track & field, women's track & field, women's volleyball, and wrestling. The award was first established during the 2008-09 academic year.
