Ramsey wins JT on final throw at Oregon 4A-5A-6A state meets, Saturday, May 24

EUGENE, Ore. – Nikki Ramsey of Gladstone won the girls 4A javelin on her final throw at the Oregon state championships on a sunny Saturday morning here at Hayward Field.

Conditions were much-improved after two days of chilly rain. Today’s highs were expected to reach the mid-60s.
All six team championships are to be decided today. The leaders entering the final day were the West Salem boys (26 points) and Jesuit girls (24) in 6A; Marshfield boys (31) and Summit girls (37) in 5A, and the North Bend boys (46) and Astoria girls (50) in 4A.
The Astoria girls quickly extended their lead in the first event of the day, the javelin, when Lynnae Huber threw 117-11 for 5th place, moving Astoria to 54 points. Henley stood 2nd with 35 ½, with plenty of chances to score this afternoon on the track.
But the 5A javelin event was won by Ramsey, a senior (pictured above) who threw 133-1 on her final throw, passing the 130-5 by Lindsey Remington of Tillamook. Ramsey looked on in disbelief as her throw was being measured, waiting expectantly for the distance to be posted. She put her hands to her head in amazement when she realized she had won.
The 5A boys long jump was won by Derek Newsom of Silverton, who leaped 23-8 ¾w. Sophomore Anthony LaCoste of West Albany went 22-10w on his final jump to finish 2nd.
Curtis Fisher (21-11 ¾) and J.J. Park (21-7 3/4w) finished 3-5 to score 10 points for Sherwood and move them into 2nd place in the 5A standings with 28 points, 3 behind Marshfield. Marshfield, which has never won the state boys’ team championship, has hurdler Caleb Kruse in both hurdle events later today.
The girls 5A shot put was won for the 2nd year in a row by Alesha Trattner of Glencoe, who broke her own meet record with a best of 41-11.
Christy Mosier of Summit took 2nd at 39-2 to give Summit 8 points and extend its lead in 5A over Crater, 45-35. Summit has its star sprinter, Kellie Schueler, in the wings ready to take the track four times during the afternoon, in the 100, 200, 400 and 4x4.
In the girls 6A triple jump, sophomore Nche Onyima of Gresham took the early lead, jumping 37-2 out of the first flight.
