Nathan Mathabane, Kellie Schueler, Luke Puskedra RISE/Gatorade 2007-08 T&F Athletes of the Year


          Nathan Mathabane of Lincoln High School in Portland was awarded the Gatorade and RISE Magazine 2007-08 Oregon Boys' Track and Field Athlete of the Year. Mathabane, a junior, won the Oregon 6A 1,500 in 3:53.28.  That mark ranks as the nation's #2 performance for high school athletes this year. He was second in the 6A 800 in 1:51.88. At the Stanford Invitational Mathabane was 6th in the mile (4:16.74) and 2nd in the 3,000 at the Oregon Relays in 8:39.31, the 20th-best and 12th-best prep performances nationally in those events, respectively.
 

          Bend sophomore Kellie Schueler of Summit was awarded the Gatorade and RISE Magazine 2007-08 Oregon Girls' Track and Field Athlete of the Year. Schueler set three Class 5A state meet records and won four events to lead Summit to the State 5A team championship. Schueler won the 100 in 12.01, the 200 in 24.54 and the 400 in 55.04 to repeat her performance of 2006-07.  Schueler anchored the winning 4-x-400-meter relay to a meet 3:55.11.

 
         Senior Luke Puskedra of Judge Memorial Catholic High School in Salt Lake City was chosen as the Gatorade and RISE Magazine 2007-08 Utah Boys' Track and Field Athlete of the Year. Puskedra won the 1,600 and 3,200 at the Class 3A state meet, leading Judge Memorial to a 3rd place team finish. At the 2008 Prefontaine Classic, Puskedra ran the nation's best high school 2 mile time when he finished 10th at the Pre in 8:46.41. That performance ranks him 14th on the all-time high school list. Puskedra has signed a National Letter of intent for the University of Oregon.
