Jesse Staub, Annie Hess and Greg Schultz all won national NAIA championships for Concordia in different throwing events on Friday in Edwardsville, Ill.
Staub, a freshman from Wilsonville, threw a lifetime best, 223-3, to win the men’s javelin by a foot over Curtis Moss of the University of British Columbia. Concordia teammates also placed 3rd and 5th, as the Portland school stood in 2nd place entering the final day of the championships on the Southern Illinois campus with 36 points. Azusa Pacific had 45.
Hess, senior from Bickleton, Wash., won her 3rd NAIA championship, taking the discus with a seasonal best of 176-6, again with two teammates also making the top six.
Concordia’s women’s team had 30 points, good for 3rd place in the standings after Friday’s results.
Schultz, a senior from Centralia, Wash., won the men’s hammer with a throw of 210-9, repeating as champion, while two throwers from Eastern Oregon placed 2nd and 7th.
An Oregonian also won a national championship at the NCAA Division III meet in Marietta, Ohio.
Josh Lovell, a junior at Linfield, scored 7,080 points to win the decathlon, defeating his twin brother, Jeremy, who finished 2nd, 223 points behind. At the NAIA meet, two Concordia throwers also placed in the women’s javelin, but they were both beaten by Ali Super, a freshman at Lewis-Clark State at Lewiston, Idaho. Super, who is from West Linn, threw 156-0, a lifetime best, for 2nd place, losing only to a Canadian from UBC.

Also scoring in the event were Sarah Schelb of Oregon Tech, 7th, and Stephanie Miller of Southern Oregon, 8th, giving the Northwest 6 of the 8 placewinners in the event.
In the men’s jav, Paul Roshau, a junior from Churchill, was 3rd at 220-0 and teammate Eric Whalen, a freshman from LaSalle Prep, was 5th at 210-6.
In the women’s discus, Concordia’s Kristine Leonard was 3rd (150-11) and Emily Redmayne-Titley 6th (146-5), both lifetime bests.
In the men’s hammer, the two Eastern Oregon scorers were Chris Dilley, a junior from David Douglas in Portland, 2nd at 204-3, and Quinten Baxter, 7th at 176-11.
Two EO teammates also placed in the men’s decathlon. Lucas Ohmes was 3rd with 6,748 points, Ivan Staeheli 8th with 6,266.
A number of other competitors from Eastern Oregon, Southern Oregon and Concordia advanced to finals on the track for finals on Saturday.
