SEATTLE, Wash. – Freshman Trevor Dunbar, running unattached, ran the fastest 3,000-meters in the nation by a college student last weekend as the Portland Pilots track & field team kicked off the indoor season at the UW Preview on Saturday in Dempsey Indoor. Dunbar’s time of 8:04.96, a personal best by 10 seconds, is five seconds quicker than the next fastest time of 8:09.92 posted by Festus Kigen of Texas Christian University at the Texas A&M Invitational.
“Trevor will be redshirting the indoor season in preparation for the USA cross country championships in February,” said head coach Rob Conner. “He is obviously in great shape and ready to go.”
Dunbar’s time would also be a school record if he were running for the team. The UP indoor 3,000-meter record is held by Ryan Craig, who ran 8:05.61 in 2003.
Redshirt sophomore Matt Frerker finished the 3,000-meter event in ninth with a time of 8:31.81. Meanwhile, freshman Trey Parry narrowly missed a top-10 result coming in at the 11th-position with a time of 8:34.37.
Elsewhere, freshman Cody Wells landed in the top-15 of the 800-meters with a 1:57.27 performance.
In the high jump, sophomore Jacob Lampe tied for eighth-place clearing a jump of 1.96m.
The Pilots now resume training for two weeks before returning to Dempsey Indoor for the UW Invitational on Jan. 29-30.
