EUGENE, Ore. – Redshirt freshman Marit Tegelaar clocked the nation’s seventh fastest time so far this season in the 3,000-meters and senior Tommy Betterbed posted a heat win in the 1,500-meters as the Portland Pilots men’s and women’s track and field teams continued their outdoor season at the Oregon Preview at Hayward Field on Saturday.
Tegelaar’s 9:49.64 performance puts her eighth in UP’s all-time record book.
Meanwhile, the women’s side enjoyed three other UP all-time top-10 results and several other solid performances.
“Our hurdlers did an excellent job and I expect Kiyah Williams to break our school records before too long,” said women’s head coach Ian Solof. “Marit ran a very strong race in the 3,000-meters to finish third overall. I also thought our 4x4 team ran a tough race and should keep getting better this season.”
Freshman Williams became the third fastest all-time for a UP runner in both the 100-meter hurdles and 400-meter hurdles posting times of 14.71 and 1:04.24, respectively.
In the field events, senior Carolyn Borsch performed well with a 15-8.25 leap in the long jump.
On the men’s side, Betterbed completed the 1,500-meter race in a heat-best 3:55.43 taking eighth place among 31 athletes.
“I was happy with our guys in the 1,500,” said men’s head coach Rob Conner. “Tommy looked great and is also poised for a nice 5,000 in the coming weeks. I was particularly impressed with three of our young guys, Trey Parry, Cody Wells and Jared Bassett.”
Freshman Parry crossed the finish line of the 1,500-meters competition just behind team veteran Betterbed’s heels with a time of 3:55.79, strong enough for ninth overall and a personal record. Freshman Wells came in at 3:57.15, also capturing a substantial PR.
Also in the 1,500, redshirt freshman Bassett posted a 3:57.55 for 14th overall.
The squads will be in action next on Friday and Saturday, Mar. 26-27, 2010 when they take part in the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif.
