AUSTIN, Texas --- Sophomore Alfred Kipchumba qualified for the NCAA Track and Field Outdoor Championships in the men’s 10,000-meter run and junior Cori Moore advanced to the quarterfinals of the women’s 800-meter run at the NCAA West Preliminary held at Mike A. Myers Stadium on Thursday night. Portland has now had at least one competitor qualify for the NCAA Championships in 19 consecutive seasons.
Kipchumba placed 10th overall among a field of 46 runners with a time of 29:45.30. The top 12 runners automatically advanced to the national meet which will be held at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. on June 9-12.
“Alfred ran a brilliant race,” men’s track coach Rob Conner said. “He stayed in the lead pack and stayed out of trouble. The goal was to qualify for nationals and he did that comfortably.”
Moore competed in one of the six heats in the first round of the 800-meter run. The top three from each heat automatically advanced, along with the next six runners with the best times. Moore ran a 2:08.03 and finished fourth in her heat, advancing based on time. She moves on to the quarterfinals which are scheduled for Friday at 4:45 p.m. (Pacific). The top three runners from each of the three heats, plus the next three runners with the best times will advance to nationals.
Senior Sifrash Ademe was the third Pilot to run on Thursday. She competed in the women’s 10,000-meter run, but did not finish.
Portland’s fourth regional qualifier is redshirt freshman Jared Bassett, who will compete in the 3,000-meter Steeplechase on Friday at 6:30 p.m. (Pacific).
