AUSTIN, Texas --- Junior Cori Moore and redshirt freshman Jared Bassett competed at the NCAA West Preliminary held at Mike A. Myers Stadium on Friday night. Moore finished 19th overall in the 800-meter semi’s, while Bassett placed 10th in his heat and 26th overall In the 3,000-meter Steeplechase.
Portland sophomore Alfred Kipchumba qualified for the NCAA Track and Field Outdoor Championships in the 10,000-meter run on Thursday, marking the 19th consecutive season that the Pilots will have at least one competitor at nationals.
Moore, who qualified for the quarterfinals after running a 2:08.03 in the first round, covered the 800m in a time of 2:08.14. The top three runners from each of the three heats, plus the next three runners with the best times advanced to nationals.
Bassett entered the West Preliminary ranked 36th in the region and put up a time of 9:05.34.
“Jared ran a nice race and it’s great for him to experience the NCAA Championships as a freshman,” said UP head coach Rob Conner. “I am really excited for his future.”
Kipchumba will be the lone Pilot representative at the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, hosted in Eugene, Ore., at Hayward Field on June 9-12.
