10,000-Meter Results
EUGENE, Ore. --- University of Portland sophomore Alfred Kipchumba placed eighth and earned All-America honors in the 10,000-meter run at the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships Thursday night at Hayward Field. Kipchumba, who extended Portland’s streak to 19 seasons with at least one runner at nationals, crossed the finish line with a time of 29:09.63.
Kipchumba moved into second place just after the half way point of the race and remained in second until he was passed by a pack of five with one mile remaining.
"Alfred ran a great race," Portland coach Rob Conner said. "It was a gutsy performance. We didn't want it to have too many guys still in it with a mile to go, so Alf took the pace at 5K and dropped the hammer. That broke up the pack and allowed him to gain a podium spot."
He joins Pete Julian, Ryan Grote, Joe Driscoll, John Moore Michael Kilburg and David Kinsella as Pilots to earn All-America honors in the 10K.
Kipchumba, a two-time All-American in cross country, qualified for the national meet after placing 10th at the NCAA West Preliminary on May 27 with a time of 29:45.30.
Sam Chelenga of Liberty University won the event with a time of 28:37.40. Kipchumba was one of four underclassmen to finish in the top 10 among the 24 competitors.
