DES MOINES, Iowa --- University of Portland freshman Trevor Dunbar opened a big lead before cruising to the finish and winning the 5,000 meters at the 2010 USA Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Drake Stadium on Thursday. Dunbar now moves on to the 2010 IAAF World Junior Championships, which are set for July 19-25 in Moncton, Canada.
“Trevor did a great job,” Portland coach Rob Conner said. “He took the lead after four laps and steadily widened the lead. At one point he was 80 meters out front. He did a nice job without much in the way of workouts. He has been just doing easy running with his brother at Lake Tahoe and his main focus is working on his base for cross country.”
Dunbar took the lead with nine laps to go and opened the gap all the way to the finish, winning in 14:34.63. N.C. State's Andrew Colley was the runner-up in 14:37.28.
The top two finishers in each event at the junior championships will compete in Moncton, provided that they have met the qualifying standard. Dunbar previously met the qualifying standard by running 13:55.22 at the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational on May 1.
