SALEM, Ore. --- The No. 8 University of Portland men’s cross country team had four of the five top finishers and won the Charles Bowles Invitational on Saturday at Bush Park. The Pilots finished with 25 team points among the 23-team field as the varsity squad ran for the first time as a team this season.
Sophomore Trevor Dunbar paced Portland with a second-place finish and time of 23:22.67 at the 8K course. Sophomore Joash Osoro was third (23:31.69), junior Alfred Kipchumba placed fourth (23:31.73) and sophomore Lars Erik Malde took fifth (23:33.68).
“Honestly, that was one of the most impressive team performances in Pilot history,” head coach Rob Conner said. “The fact that it was practically a time trial makes it even more impressive. Obviously our three sophomores are no longer freshmen. I would think it is fair to say our top four are probably as good as any four in the nation right now.”
Portland’s top four finishers all eclipsed the UP record at the Charles Bowles Invitational which was set by two-time All-American John Moore in 2005 (23:55). Peter Christmas was Portland’s final scorer and finished 11th overall (24:08.78).
Marko Cheseto of Alaska Anchorage won the event with a time of 23:18.70.
The Pilots will next compete at the NCAA Pre-Nationals on Saturday, Oct. 16 in Terra Haute, Ind.
