SAN BRUNO, Calif. --- University of Portland sophomore Joash Osoro was named the West Coast Conference Co-Runner of the Month for September, the league office announced on Wednesday. Osoro won the Pier Park Invitational in his only meet of the month to share the honors with San Francisco harrier Jose Madera.
Osoro ran away with the nine-team Pier Park Invitational individual title in Portland on Sept. 10, finishing the 8K meet in a time of 24:42. He finished ahead of the second-place runner by nearly 24 seconds in leading the Pilots to a convincing team win.
A native of Bismarck, N.D., Osoro was one of Portland’s top runners last year as a true freshman and is off to a flying start this year. He most recently finished third overall at the Charles Bowles Invitational on Oct. 2, posting a time of 23:31.69 at the Bush Park course.
Madera, a freshman for the Dons, finished 28th at the Stanford Invitational with a time of 24:30. He also finished eighth at the San Francisco Invitational in a time of 25:11, just 19 seconds behind the race winner from Kentucky.
The No. 8 ranked Pilot men’s cross country team will next compete at the NCAA Pre-National meet on Saturday, Oct. 16 in Terra Haute, Ind.
