SAN BRUNO, Calif. - - - University of Portland sophomore Trevor Dunbar was named the West Coast Conference Co-Runner of the Month for October, the league office announced on Tuesday. Dunbar finished second at the Charles Bowles Invitational and fourth at the NCAA Pre-Nationals. He shares runner of the month honors with San Francisco Don Jose Madera.
Dunbar led the Pilots to a dominate win at the Charles Bowles Invitational in Salem on Oct. 2, finishing the 8K meet in a time of 23:22.67. His effort set a new UP record at the Charles Bowles Invitational.
In his next race Dunbar faced some of the top runners in the nation at the NCAA Pre-Nationals “White Race,” an event which featured 10 nationally ranked teams. He finished the 8K race in 23:42.4, good for fourth place overall. The Pilots also claimed fourth place as a team.
A native of Kodiak, AK, Dunbar was one of Portland’s top runners last year as a true freshman and is picking up where he left off for his sophomore campaign.
Madera, a freshman for the Dons, began the month with an 11th place finish at the Bronco Invitational 8K in 24:17. He also finished second at the WCC Championships at Crystal Springs Course in Belmont, CA last Saturday.
The No. 13 ranked Pilot men’s cross country team will next compete at the NCAA West Regional Championships hosted by the University of Oregon in Springfield on November 13.
