PORTLAND, Ore. --- With a berth to the NCAA Cross Country Championships at stake, the Portland Pilots will go head-to-head with a number of nationally ranked opponents this Saturday at the Springfield Country Club for the NCAA Division I West Regional Championships. The men’s 10k race features 25 teams from across the region while the women’s 6k race will have 30.The No. 12 Pilot men are fresh off winning their 32nd consecutive West Coast Conference championship. The women finished runner-up in their race.
Springfield Country Club will be hosting the NCAA West Regional for the third time in the last four years.
The top two teams in each race earn automatic berths to the NCAA Championships on Nov. 22 in Terre Haute, Ind. Individual and team at-large bids will also be awarded following the nine regionals held around the nation on Saturday; those bids will be extended on Sunday.
The women’s race features six nationally ranked programs in No. 4 Stanford, No. 6 Arizona, No. 7 Oregon, No. 11 Washington, No. 26 California, and No. 27 San Francisco.
The men’s race includes No. 2 Stanford, led by defending NCAA West Regional individual champion Chris Derrick, No. 3 Oregon, No. 12 Portland, and No. 22 California.
The West Region is comprised of teams from the states of Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon and Washington, with the exception of Idaho State and Northern Arizona, which compete in the Mountain Region.
