SPRINGFIELD, Ore. --- The University of Portland men’s cross country team finished 4
th at the NCAA West Regional 10k meet on Saturday at the Springfield Country Club. Sophomore Trevor Dunbar finished first overall, edging out Stephen Sambu of Arizona, earning NCAA West Regional individual champion honors. No. 3 Oregon finished just ahead of No. 2 Stanford to secure first place as a team.
All seven Pilot runners finished in the top 100 overall with sophomore Lars Erik Malde joining Dunbar in the top 15. Malde completed the race in 30:19.41, placing 12th overall.
Defending NCAA West Regional Champion Chris Derrick of Stanford finished 7th in 30:14.57.
The race included four nationally ranked teams, No. 2 Stanford, No. 3 Oregon, No. 12 Portland, and No. 22 California.
The West Region is comprised of teams from the states of Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon and Washington, with the exception of Idaho State and Northern Arizona, which compete in the Mountain Region.
Oregon and Stanford earned automatic berths to the NCAA Championships on Nov. 22 in Terre Haute, Ind. Individual and team at-large bids will also be awarded following the nine regionals held around the nation on Saturday; those bids will be extended on Sunday.
