SPRINGFIELD, Ore. --- The University of Portland women’s cross country team finished 9th at the NCAA West Regional 6k meet on Saturday at the Springfield Country Club. Redshirt senior Dana Morgan was the top Pilot individual finisher as she ran a 21:06.32, good for 40th place. No. 11 University of Washington won the team competition by just four points, narrowly defeating No. 7 University of Oregon.
Six of the seven Pilot runners finished in the top 100 overall. Joining Morgan was redshirt senior Natalie Hemphill (21:21.32), redshirt sophomore Marit Tegelaar (21:28.36), junior Lyndy Davis (21:30.64), redshirt freshman Kellie Houser (21:33.74), and senior Theresa Hailey (21:45.80).
Freshman Natasha Verma finished 112th in 22:06.71.
Jordan Hasey of Oregon finished first overall, completing the 6k race in 20:01.9.
The race featured six nationally ranked programs in No. 4 Stanford, No. 6 Arizona, No. 7 Oregon, No. 11 Washington, No. 26 California, and No. 27 San Francisco.
The West Region is comprised of teams from the states of Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon and Washington, with the exception of Idaho State and Northern Arizona, which compete in the Mountain Region.
Washington and Oregon earned automatic berths to the NCAA Championships on Nov. 22 in Terre Haute, Ind. Individual and team at-large bids will also be awarded following the nine regionals held around the nation on Saturday; those bids will be extended on Sunday.
