NEW ORLEANS, La. --- The University of Portland men’s cross country program was honored by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Thursday with the All-Academic team award. The Pilots captured their 32
nd consecutive WCC title in October and finished 13
th at the NCAA National Championship race to end the 2010 season. The Pilots maintain a team GPA of 3.19.
This announcement comes on the heels of the news that sophomore Lars Erik Malde was named to the 56 person USTFCCCA Division I cross country All-Academic team. Malde is majoring in Engineering Management and owns a 3.70 GPA.
A total of 152 institutions represent 31 conferences that compose the group of honorees. The Big 12 led all conferences with 10 members earning All-Academic honors and was followed by the Big East which had nine.
To qualify as a USTFCCCA All-Academic Cross Country Team, the team must have had a cumulative team GPA of 3.00 or better and have started at least five runners at their respective NCAA regional championship.
San Francisco, Loyola Marymount, Santa Clara, and Portland were the WCC member schools to earn the award this season.
