On Friday evening Southridge High School displayed its depth in both boys & girls division, when it claimed team victories.  The guys were reasonably dominant but the Saxons of South Salem made the team results come down to the very end with Southridge earning the victory by half a point.   Although the conditions were not as challenging as at last weekend’s Tiger Invitational in Battleground it was cool, which felt even chillier due to a consistent and fairly stiff breeze.

The conditions led to an alternation in plans for Central Catholic’s Andy Bennison, who confirmed that he has signed to compete in college for Syracuse University.   The senior star, who was in Syracuse’s noted Carrier Dome, when over 30,000 basketball fans  packed the facility  to watch the game of  national importance, when the Orange faced Villanova, found a bit of a preview of eastern running conditions on Friday, yet still ran a fine time in the 3K.   With the cool breeze he & coach Dave Franks decided to hold back early before pulling away later with a solid time of 8:51.69, which still ranks around tenth in the state.   Kyle Ruhlin of Thurston followed in 2nd with 9:16 to top Gustavo Cortez of Marshall by two seconds.

Justin Rocereto of Southridge claimed the 1500M with his time of 4:11.14, which is around fourth in the state so far.   Will Strah of Crescent Valley followed a second later and freshman Kyle Thompson of CC took third with 4:16.    The Southridge team also earned valuable points in the 800M, when Kyle Lubash cut through the wind in 2:00.70 & defeated Jesse Fordyce of Lake Oswego, who ran 2:01.94.   Brennar Scarlett of Central won the fiercest battle of the day when he ran 23.51 to nip Lincoln’s Matt Sheldon by one-hundredth of a second.  In other events Tim McDowell of McNary claimed the 100M (11.68), Cole Hogdson garnered the 400M for Lake O (52.81), while Jack Hill of South Salem garnered the 110 hurdles with 15.76.  Hill also added a second in the 300 hurdles (41.40), when he followed Royal Black of Southridge across the finish line.

Although it was a very poor day to compete in the pole vault Zach Cramblit of Thurston still managed a very solid mark in the event.  The defending State Champion in the event soared 14-06, which ties him for second in the state this season.   He made three attempts at 15 feet and narrowly missed on his first & third attempts, which bodes quite well for this season.   Zach noted it was a much better start to the season than in his previous year.   His team mate Javan Gray was a one-man team in the weight events on Friday as he earned victories in the shot (53-05), the discus (146-03) and the javelin (183-01).  He is now 5th in the state in the shot & eighth in the discus.   Alex Balducci of Central Catholic took second in the shot with a heave of 51-03, which puts him 8th in the state overall.

The long jump was also hotly contested and Xavier Griggs’ leap of 21-06 for Central Catholic barely won the event over Royal Black, who went 21-02.   Jordan Morgan was not far behind with 20-07 for Southridge.    Jameel Hill was victorious in the triple jump for South Salem, when his  mark of 42-02 topped Lake Oswego’s duo of Clay Leedy (41-04) & Jasper Yildirim (41-03).

Lincoln’s Claire DeVoe had a busy day at the Laker meet.   She led the bulk of the race in the 1500 meters and then pulled away to take victory in a time of 4:54.00, and she now ranks second in Oregon on the season.  Leah Thompson of Catlin Gable followed with a time of 4:59, which is just off of a top ten time.  Tualatin’s Kristen Coffman earned third in the event with 5:04 and she later added a victory in the high jump with 5-01.   The high jump victory, incidentally, was a narrow one, as Madison Smukalla of Southridge also jumped that height but was credited with second due to misses.   The Southridge sophomore did not have to worry about misses in the 100 meter hurdles and Madison scored a solid victory in that event with a 17.34 clocking defeating Rachel Wisler of Tualatin & Anne Burnham of South Salem.   Madison ended the day as a contributor to the victorious 4 by 400M Realy.

Claire DeVoe came back later in the 3K and led early in the race but Saxon runner Emily Weber took command midway in the race and stormed home to triumph in a time of  10:46.48.  Emily has had a number of physical problems the past two years and it was great to see her looking so strong.  She has the fourth best time in the state.   DeVoe ‘s second place time of 11:02 is probably 11th in the State, so she had a solid day.   Freshman Vivian Hawkinson of South Salem placed third in the event.   Vivian ‘s sister Lila, unfortunately, will miss at least part of the season due to a stress fracture.

Lainey Nash has the fastest time in the State but her quality run of 58.62 in inclement conditions earned her a solid victory in the 400 Meter run over Aliyah Gallup of Thurston (60.58) & Riley Hatfield of Lake Oswego (61).   Aiyanna Cameron of Crescent Valley triumphed in the 800M in 2:25.57, which puts her around 7th in the state.   Haley Hunt of Southridge took 2nd in 2:25 and Rebecca Pearson ran 2:28 for third.    Sabrina Moore won the 100 Meter dash in 12.84 and the Southridge flash followed with a 26.30 in the 200M, which was good for third.  Lainey Nash made the 200M her second victory of the meet, when she ran 26.08.   Both Moore and Nash were on the victorious 4 by 100 relay for Southridge (49.29)

There was very little difference in the top five efforts in the shot put, which was claimed by Amber Swayne of LO with 34-11.   Close behind her were Marisa Hamilton of SR (34-08), Dana Frederick of South Salem (34-04), Amantha Hood (34-02 for Central Catholic) & Katie Kosmowski (33-10 of Lake).  Haley Russell of Lake Oswego was the only athlete to throw over 100 in the discus & won with 105-01, while Kalia Flocker edged Stacy Titchenal of McNary (112-07 to 112-04 in the javelin.  Taylor Waite of CV placed third in the event with 109-10.

Aliyah Gallup made her second major contribution to the Southridge score, when she won the long jump with 16-11.   Mariah Morton (Catlin Gable) & Jordyn Searle (Southridge) placed behind her with 16-07 & 16-06 respectively.   McNary’s Averi Wing was a close 5th with 16-5.    Eloise Miller went 35-02 to annex the triple jump over Michel Turney of CV.   Miller is now fifth in Oregon.      Jenna Quesnel of McNary soared 10-06 in the pole vault in spite of the wind to win that event over Carlie Donoghue of CV, who went 10-00.
