Stanford, Calif. ---The outdoor track season continued for the Pilots with a pair of weekend meets. A small UP contingent traveled to the Cardinal Invitational hosted by Stanford while the rest of the team competed at the Pacific Twilight hosted by Pacific University in Forest Grove. A pair of school records fell at the Cardinal Invitational as senior Cori Moore finished the 800m in 2:06.61 and junior Alfred Kipchumba ran the 5000m in 13:40.98.
Following the record performance by Moore, senior Dana Morgan ran the 5000m in 16:37.58 which is good for sixth best in the Pilot record book and senior Natalie Hemphill ran the 3000m steeple in 11:03.29, the second fastest all-time Pilot run in the event. Hemphill now owns the top two all-time records in the 3000m steeple; she ran a 10:47.23 during the 2008 season.
The men’s 5000m event saw two record breaking performances from Portland runners as freshman Trevor Dunbar momentarily claimed the UP record with his 13:42.53 run before Kipchumba took it away by running a 13:40.98 in the following heat.
“Exciting exciting stuff for our program! I really feel that both guys ran to their current fitness and I feel that they can improve that level over the next month,” said Head Coach Rob Conner.
At the Pacific Twilight Portland men took the top two spots in the 1500m event. Trey Parry finished first overall in 3:52.02 and Cody Wells finished second in 3:52.22. Julia Fonk added an unattached 4:39.38 in the women’s 1500m event.
Next up for the Pilots is the 2011 Oregon Twilight on Friday, May 6 at Hayward Field in Eugene.
