Salem, Ore. --- The University of Portland men’s and women’s track and field teams had a good showing at the 2011 West Coast Invitational which concluded on Saturday, May 14 at Charles Bowles track in Salem. The event was hosted by UP but was held at the Willamette University facility this year. Matt Winterer set a new PR in the high jump with his 6-08 effort while Emma Fredere continued her strong season in the hammer throw.
Fredere bettered her own UP school record, and set a new PR, in the Hammer Throw with her 120-08 heave. She also had the fourth best all-time UP showing in the discus, 118-03.
Cori Moore and Theresa Hailey also set new top-10 all-time UP records in the 400m and 3000m steeplechase, respectively. Moore finished the 400m in 57.40, good for 5th fastest all-time, and Hailey finished the steeplechase in 11:41.80, good for 6th fastest all-time. Kiyah Williams set a new PR in the 400m hurdles, finishing in 1:01.58, putting her on the bubble for regional qualification.
The men’s side saw five Pilots earn new PR’s.
Jumps coach Todd Wojchik noted that Winterer’s PR was a product of hard work. “He has consistently gone up every meet and PR’d at the right time. It is a case of good old fashioned hard work paying off,” said Wojchik.
Trevor Dunbar finished first overall in the 1500m, completing the race in 3:44.47 (PR). It was two full seconds faster than his run at the Stanford Invite earlier in the outdoor season. Chase Caulkins joined in with his first place finish in the 5000m in 14:09.63, eight seconds faster than his previous personal record.
The runs by Caulkins and Lars Erik Malde, who finished the 5000m in 14:16.33, met the Regional Qualifying standard.
Other Pilot first place finishes included Kiyah Williams (400m Hurdles), Portland ‘A’ (4x400 Relay), and Jared Bassett (3000m Steeplechase).
"It was a great first-time event. It was an exciting atmosphere and nearly all of our athletes either PR'd or were very close which is what you'd like to see in the last team meet," said head coach Rob Conner.
The NCAA Preliminary Round event begins on May 26 in Eugene at Hayward Field on the University of Oregon campus.
