INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. --- The NCAA Academic Progress Rates (APR) were released on Tuesday and the University of Portland is once again among the national elite. All 16 Portland programs rated high on the scale as no teams are nearing any penalties. Among the four Division I universities in the state of Oregon, Portland had the highest APR in 14 of the 16 sports in which it competes. The University’s overall average APR is also tops in the state and second in the West Coast Conference, trailing only Gonzaga.
Each Division I team calculates its APR annually based on the eligibility and retention of scholarship student-athletes. Teams scoring below 925 out of 1,000 can face penalties, such as scholarship losses and restrictions on practice and competition. Rates are based on the past four years of performance.
Portland’s most recent four-year APR rate has 15 programs above the NCAA average, both overall and among private schools. Five teams were recognized for scoring among the top 10 percent nationally in their respective sports – women’s soccer, women’s basketball, volleyball, women’s indoor track and women’s outdoor track.
Of the 12 WCC-sponsored sports in which Portland competes, the Pilots lead the league in five APR calculations, are in the top two in seven sports, and top four in 11 sports.
For the 2009-10 season alone, 14 of the 16 sports that Portland sponsors recorded a perfect score of 1,000.
