EUGENE, Ore. --- Portland had six runners participate in the first day of competition at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Championships, West Preliminary, on Thursday in Eugene. Senior Cori Moore fell just short of advancing to the Championship round in the 800m while returning All-American Alfred Kipchumba was denied a return trip to the Championship due to an apparent leg trip that went unnoticed by race officials.
Moore finished fifth in Heat number two of the women’s 800m in 2:08.84, finishing just .74 of a second out of Championship qualification.
The Pilots had two runners participate in the women’s 10k with Lyndy Davis and Kellie Houser finishing 25th and 39th, respectively. Davis recorded a time of 34:45.76 while Houser clocked in with a 35:44.82. National qualifying times ranged from 33:24.12 to 33:49.32 in the event.
Three Pilots ran the men’s 10k with Lars Erik Malde leading the way with his 19th place finish in a time of 29:43.93. Kipchumba finished the race in 30:01.72 while Craig Hopkins rounded out the UP effort in 30:08.03.
Kipchumba, a returning All-American in the 10k who held the third fastest time in the event this season, was tripped up from behind on the 16th lap of the race and was unable to regain his place with the lead pack. The hard fall resulted in a race protest by Head Coach Rob Conner but results stood as NCAA officials did not see the trip as it happened.
Preliminary round events continue on Friday and Saturday at Hayward Field in Eugene. Portland will field competitors in the men’s 3000m steeplechase and the men’s and women’s 5000m.
