EUGENE, Ore. --- The 2011 Division I Track & Field Outdoor Championship Preliminary Round in Eugene is now is the books. Events concluded on Saturday as a total of five Pilots ran in the men’s and women’s 5000m event, respectively, in front of a crowd of 7,000. Freshman Trevor Dunbar finished 18
th overall, and ninth in his heat, in 13:53.71 while battling against a slow pace set by the field in his heat.
Joining Dunbar in the men’s 5000m were junior Alfred Kipchumba and freshman Chase Caulkins. Kipchumba was not at 100% after falling hard on the track on Friday in the men’s 10k as a result of being tripped up from behind. He finished the 5000m in 14:02.82 which was good for 24th overall and 13th in his heat. Caulkins completed the event in 14:41.18, finishing in 44th overall.
Senior Dana Morgan and junior Marit Tegelaar represented the Pilots on the women’s side. Morgan came in 35th overall in 16:56.06 while Tegelaar was 43rd in 17:17.00.
Sophomore Jared Bassett, qualifying in the 3000m steeplechase on Friday, will be the lone Pilot representative at the National Championship Final Round on June 8-11 in Des Moines, Iowa.
Portland has had at least one competitor at the Outdoor Nationals in 20 consecutive seasons.
