DES MOINES, Iowa --- University of Portland junior Jared Bassett ran a PR of 8:50.99 in the 3,000m steeplechase on Wednesday at the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships and placed seventh in his heat. Bassett just missed qualifying for the finals as the top six from each heat move on. His participation at nationals extended Portland’s streak to 20 consecutive years with having at least one student-athlete at the NCAA Track & Field Championships.
"Jared has had a terrific year,” Portland head coach Rob Conner said. “He has PR'd at every distance he has raced and bettered his PR from regionals. He missed making the final by about half a second."
Bassett qualified for the NCAA Championships with a 10th-place finish after a posting a then-PR time of 8:51.57 at the Preliminary Round meet in Eugene, Ore. A native of Coos Bay, Ore., this was his first appearance at nationals on the track. He is also one of the top distance runners for Portland’s nationally-ranked cross country team.
