TERRA HAUTE, Ind. --- The No. 12 University of Portland men’s cross country team showed well at the 2011 NCAA Pre-National meet on Sunday. The Pilots finished second among the 35-team field, beating out four other ranked teams. The Pilots had a team score of 104, trailing only No. 8 Colorado (82).
Junior Trevor Dunbar paced the Pilots with an eighth place individual finish (24:15), while senior Alfred Kipchumba finished 15th individually (24:31). Junior Lars Erik Malde (22nd), junior Joash Osoro (28th) and redshirt freshman Scott Fauble (31st) rounded out the scoring for the Pilots.
Portland brought a total of nine runners to the meet and the Pilots’ top six runners crossed the finish line before any other squad’s top five. All nine Pilot harriers that competed on Sunday finished in the top 75 individually.
Fifth-ranked Iona finished third (109), No. 30 Eastern Kentucky was fourth (186) and No. 11 Florida State rounded out the top five (186). Iona’s Leonard Korir (23:55) took the individual title.
Portland is scheduled to take part in the Oregon State Beaver Classic on Saturday, Oct. 22, while the Pilot varsity squad will next compete for the program’s 33rd consecutive West Coast Conference title. The 2011 WCC Championships are set for Saturday, Oct. 29.
