SAN BRUNO, Calif. – The Portland Pilots men's team has won 32 consecutive WCC titles and is looking to defend its crown at the WCC Cross Country Championships on October 29 at the Crystal Springs Course in Belmont, Calif. The Pilots have been ranked in the USTFCCCA poll throughout the season and sit at No. 8 in the most recent poll released on October 18.
All-Americans Trevor Dunbar, Alfred Kipchumba and the rest of the Pilots will look to keep the nation’s longest conference winning streak alive, but it won’t be easy. Portland will actually be an underdog entering Saturday’s 8K meet as BYU, the newest member of the West Coast Conference, enters the weekend ranked No. 3 nationally.
BYU senior Miles Batty was the 2010 Mountain West Conference individual champion with a time of 25:01:6 in the 8k race at the Jacoby Golf Course in Laramie, Wyo. on October 29, 2010. San Francisco, the 2010 WCC runners-up, returns sophomore Jose Madera. Madera finished two seconds behind individual champion Craig Hopkins from Portland at last year's WCC Championships.
On the women's side, the Pilots will look to claim their 20th WCC title and first since 2008. Portland had a good showing at the Bronco Invitational on Oct. 15. Led by sophomore Merel van Steenbergen, Portland took second out of a 21-team field that included four league foes.
2010 WCC Champion San Francisco has three top-three finishes in their first four races this season. Loyola Marymount has been led all year long by two-time WCC Champion Tara Erdmann, who finished third at the Stanford Invitational in September and the NCAA Pre-Nationals in Terra Haute, Ind. on Oct. 18.
BYU has been ranked in the national polls for most of the season and won both the Utah State and BYU Invitationals in September.
The men’s 8K race is set for a 9 a.m. start, followed by the women’s 6K at 9:45 a.m. Live video and live results of the meet can be found at wccsports.com.
