BELMONT, Calif. – Junior Marit Tegelaar and sophomore Merel van Steenbergen both earned all-conference honors and led the University of Portland women’s cross country team to a third-place finish at the West Coast Conference Championships Saturday morning at Crystal Springs Course. Sophomore Kellie Houser was named honorable mention as the Pilots recorded a team score of 86 at the 6K course.
San Francisco won the team title with 32 points, followed by BYU with 52 points. Individually, Loyola Marymount redshirt senior Tara Erdmann continued her assault on the course record books, shattering her previous WCC 6K record time en route to her third individual first place finish (20:01).
Tegelaar crossed the finish line in eighth place (21:12), while van Steenbergen was 10th (21:15) and Houser 11th (21:20).
The top 10 finishers collected All-WCC honors, with the 11th through 15th place finishers garnering All-WCC Honorable Mention.
Portland will now prepare for the NCAA West Regional on November 12 at Stanford.
