PALO ALTO, Calif. – Alfred Kipchumba paced the Pilots with a time of 28:57 to place second overall as No. 8 Portland finished in second place Saturday morning at the NCAA West Regionals. Trevor Dunbar finished with a time of 28:58 in the 10k race, helping the Pilots grab an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships.
Portland, which had placed fourth at last year’s regionals, finished with 53 points, just behind No. 6 Stanford (50). The Cardinal hosted the event and were led by individual champion Chris Derrick’s time of 28:50 to secure the other automatic bid.
"It was a fun team race. We got great efforts from our big four and from our true freshman fifth man Woody Kincaid," head coach Rob Conner said after the event. "We didn't want to spend a lot of mental energy on this. We will add David Perry and Scott Fauble back to the line up for next week and finish this thing out."
The Pilots rebounded from the WCC Championship race two weeks prior where BYU became the first team other than Portland to win the WCC Championship. On Saturday, the Pilots defeated two other ranked teams in No. 17 Oregon and No. 21 UCLA.
In a loaded region in which four other teams were at receiving votes in the USTFCCCA Poll, Portland and Stanford clearly dominated the field. Cal Poly placed third in the race, 69 points behind the Pilots for a total of 122. Washington State, another team receiving votes, finished in fourth with a total of 141 points.
