PALO ALTO, Calif. --- The Portland Pilots women’s cross country team placed tenth at the 2011 NCAA West Regionals Saturday as Merel van Steenbergen led the squad with a time of 20:54. Six nationally ranked teams participated in the 25 team field at the Stanford Golf Course with No. 6 Washington capturing the overall team title.
Portland ran six runners on the day, with five of them finishing in the top 100. Joining van Steenbergen was Kellie Houser (21:25), Natasha Verma (21:47), Ruth Croft (22:03), and Marit Tegelaar (22:06). Molly Mitchell also ran for the Pilots, posting a time of 23:01.
Washington only had one player finish in the top five (Katie Flood, 20:14, fifth place), but their top five runners all finished in the top 15 to give the Huskies a score of 50 and one of two automatic bids in the west region. No. 16 Arizona received the other team bid, posting a team score of 98.
Jordan Hasay from No. 11 Oregon claimed the individual championship, seven seconds ahead of second place.
