TERRE HAUTE, Ind. --- The University of Portland men’s cross country team earned its fourth top-ten finish ever and its second highest finish ever by placing eighth at the 2011 NCAA Championships at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course on Monday. Senior Alfred Kipchumba led the way for the Pilots, finishing 21st with a time of 29:49.
It’s the third All-America honor for Kipchumba, who also earned All-American accolades in 2008 and 2009. He gives the Pilots their tenth All-America honor on the men’s side during head coach Rob Conner’s 22-year tenure.
Portland junior Trevor Dunbar finished close behind Kipchumba, coming in 35th with a time of 30:05. Dunbar got his second All-American nod after garnering national accolades with a 25th-place finish as a sophomore last year.
UP finished with four runners in the top-100, as junior Joash Oroso placed 76th with a time of 30:38, and freshman Scott Fauble was 99th with a time of 30:48.
Rounding out the race for the Pilots were freshman David Perry (30:53/111th), junior Lars Erik Malde (31:03/133rd) and freshman William Kincaid (31:19/158th).
Individual results for the purpose of team scoring are different than for All-America status due to the presence of individual qualifiers in the race. Individual qualifiers are subtracted from the standings when team score is tabulated.
This marks the ninth time the program has placed among the top-15. UP’s best team finish at the National Championship is seventh, done in 2001 and 2007. The Pilots have never gone more than two straight years without an NCAA appearance.
Arizona freshman Lawi Lalang (28:45) won the individual title, while the Wisconsin Badgers won the team championship with 97 points. Rounding out the top five in team scoring was Oklahoma State (139) in second, followed by Colorado (144), BYU (203) and Stanford (207).
