No. 8 Pilots Head to USATF National Club Cross Nationals
PORTLAND, Ore. --- Three weeks after an eight place finish at the 2011 NCAA Championships, the University of Portland’s men’s cross country team will compete at the 2011 USATF National Club Cross Country Championships this Saturday. More than 100 clubs and 1,100 competitors are expected to compete at Jefferson Park Golf Course in the Seattle, Wash.
Senior Matt Frerker and junior Cody Wells will represent the Pilots in the event, as will sophomores Chris Borg, Chase Caulkins, Charlie McDonald, and Connor Whan, and freshmen Scott Fauble and Stephen Kersh.
Frerker, Kersh, McDonald, Wells, and Whan helped the Pilots to a first place tie with Chico State at the Charles Bowles Invitational earlier this year. Frerker finished was the second fastest individual racer, while McDonald and Wells placed sixth and seventh, respectively.
Kersh, Borg, and Whan opened the season strong at the Pier Park Invitational back in September. Finishing third, fifth, and sixth, respectively, the trio gave the Pilots an easy first place victory at the 6k race.
Fauble posted identical times of 24:49 in his previous two races – the NCAA Pre Nationals and West Coast Conference Championships. The Pilots finished second in both races as Fauble grabbed WCC Honorable Mention following the WCC Championship.
Caulkins and Frerker each competed at the NCAA Regionals.
