Crouser Qualifies for Javelin Finals

The brilliant track season of Gresham junior Haley Crouser continued today at Hayward Field in Eugene, where Crouser threw for a mark of 165-07 and will now move on to the finals.   Crouser, who established a new American prep record in the event at the Aloha Relays this spring and then annexed the Oregon State championship, placed eleventh in the field of twenty-four athletes and will compete in Sunday's finals.   Only twelve women qualified but the young Gresham star was one of them.   Haley was quite consistant with a first throw of 160-05 and a final throw of 164-11, which was sandwiched around her second effort of 165-07.   Kara Patterson  is the current leader with 198-05 and former University of Oregon star Rachel Yurkovich is second with 185-01.   Standing in third place is Karen McQuillen with 182-10.   McQuillen's mark is quite interesting, because Crouser's National Record is 181 & change, so it is conceivable that Haley could make it into the top three.  It's a tall order for one so young and just making it to finals is a coup but it will make things a bit more intersting come Sunday.    We'll certainly be watching intently.
