There was plenty of action on the track for Day 2 in Barcelona but the top American performance was turned in by Aaron Ernest, when he placed second in the 100 Meter Dash. His time was 10.17, while team mate Tyreek Hill was not far behind with his 10.29 clocking, which garnered him a fourth place finish.
There was a blazing battle in the young ladies’ 5k between two Ethiopian runners with Buze Dirba getting the nod by one-hundredth of a second in 10:32.94 over Roti Aga. Third went to Agnes Tirop of Kenya, who ran 15:36. Cayla Hatton from Massachusetts, ran her personal best time of 15:50 to take fourth and also scored, what in these days ought to be considered somewhat of a moral victory, by topping one of the Kenyans by eight seconds. Allison Woodward, a freshman at the University of Oregon, ran a solid time of 16:08 to place eighth.
Haley Crouser from Gresham, Oregon placed eleventh in the finals of the Javelin. Her mark was 49.22. Jarrion Lawson contributed a bronze medal to the American cause by leaping 7.64 in the Long Jump. A Canadian and an America just missed a medal in the High Hurdles as Khamica Bingham (11.46) & Jennifer Madu placed fourth and fifth (11.52) respectively.
Semi-final action saw New Jersey’s Ajee Wilson stay alive with a second place effort in 800 Meters with a time of 2:2.43. Danielle Aragon came in fifth in her heat with 2:04 and failed to qualify. Joshua Thompson had the misfortune of being in the wrong heat of the 110 Hurdles, as his time of 13.71 gave him fourth place and failed to qualify, while Dondre Echols ran the same time taking second in his heat and moved on to the semi-finals.
Aldrich Bailey had the fastest time of the day in winning heat two of the 400 Meters in 45.79 and Arman Hall also moved on by winning his heat in 46.42. Eric Futch of the US won his heat of the 400 Meter Hurdles and moved on to the semis with a 51.82.
