Canby Invitational

Over the years the Canby Invitational has hosted some very special runners including Seth Wetzel & Bryce Burgess for the guys and Marie Davis & Meghan Armstrong for the girls, as well as their own stalwarts like Eric Logsdon & Mark Webber.   This year’s meet was held under hot & sunny conditions, so the times were not expected to be blazing but there was spirited competition just the same.

Christopher Black of Franklin had the best time of the day, as he toured the Molalla River State Park course in 17:20.   His team mate Dane Hilts finished second with 17:24, although it should be noted that Franklin did not run a number of runners including Jackson Packham, probably holding them out for the Hermiston Runner’s Soul meet on Saturday.   Canby’s Brendan Seehaver earned third with 17:31.   Noah Leonard & his Franklin team mate Sam Burnett claimed fourth & fifth respectively with times of 17:31 & :40.   Sunset garnered the next two spots, as Colin Petitt edged Mark Sussman, who were both credited with times of 17:42.  Dave Roach of Tigard came in 8th with 17:56, while Silverton’s Jonathan Sisley (17:57) & Tigard’s John Caufield (18:05) rounded out the top ten.

Franklin’s power up front carried the day as they secured first place by a 30 to 55 total over Sunset.  Tigard earned third with 65 and host Canby took fourth with 77.   The Sunset girls had little trouble on the challenging Canby course and prevailed with a nearly perfect score of 17 points.  Franklin was a distant second with 62 points with Tigard (72) & Canby (89) following in third & fourth.

Charlotte Corless followed up her third place effort with a triumph at Canby.  The Sunset runner ran 19:51 and was the only female to break twenty minutes.   Sunset harriers Nicole Griffiths and Sarah Fahmy ran 20:07 & 20:15 to take the next two places, while Sharon Zhang (20:41) & Tori Hensley (21:46) swept fifth & sixth to ensure the victory.   Maddie Fuhrman of Silverton broke up the Sunset phalanx with fourth place effort of 21:32.  Elizabeth Dean of Tigard placed seventh in 21:53 to lead her squad.  Sunset ‘s Moya Doherty chipped in an eighth place mark of 22:06 and was followed across the finish line by Isabel Leonard (22:11), who is a freshman from Franklin.   Hannaly Duff-McGaughhey of Tigard (22:20) and Margarite Lauerr of Franklin (23:50) rounded out the top eleven, while Monserrat Martinon of Putnam led her team with a twelfth place time of 24:10.

Maika Thiringer of Sunset topped the girls’ JV race, which was run at 3K, with a mark of 13:10 as she beat her team mate Amanda Calderwood by a second.    Sunset swept the top five boys’ places in JV, run at 5K, with Zach Muraoka being the top runner with 18:55.   Coach Milbrooke of Canby also offered a race for freshman & sophomore guys, which Patrick Benjamin of Franklin annexed with 11:01.   Second went to Canby’s Quin Wiltshire, who also happened to be the top freshman in the race, with his 11:15.
