The first annual Clover Hill Outdoor Track & Field Invitational will feature over 500 athletes from 16 schools comprising of mainly Central Region squads from all four districts as well as Commonwealth District teams Colonial Forge and Riverbend. With teams able to enter as many as 6 runners in the distance races, 5 athletes in the sprints and hurdles, 4 competitors in the field events, and 2 relays per event, coaches are able to get a good early season look at virtually their entire roster. Field events start at 9:00 AM and the racing on the track begins shortly thereafter at 9:30 AM with an estimated finish time before 4:30 PM.

Links to full rankings included. Anthony Williams and Potomac senior teammate Devin Brewer got out fast this spring in the 300 meter hurdles with the hurdler duo clocking the state's fastest two times in the event at their home invite, the Brian Watkins I-95 Invitational, last Saturday. The Conn-Madden Relays gathers teams from all of the Eastern Region and Tidewater area annually for an early season icebreaker, but this year's meet had a more diverse flavor with teams traveling from other parts of the state including Sarah Chandler and the South County girls from Fairfax. Chandler won the 400 meter hurdles (1:04.69) and long jump (16-8), while South County girls won the 4x400 in 4:06 on a chilly day at Todd Stadium. (Photo by Ryan Kelly)   Group AAA state 1600 indoor champion Cody Snyder and his Lee-Davis squad were also Eastern Region outdsiders attending the Conn-Madden Relays. Snyder helped Lee-Davis to a win Friday in the 4x1600 at 18:31 and they followed up that relay performance with Snyder anchoring Lee-Davis to a 3:38 victory in the sprint medley on Saturday. (Photo by Ryan Kelly)   The multi-versatile Marques Atkinson of Atlee showcased his range again this past Saturday at the Manchester Relays clearing a personal best height of 6'6" in the high jump along with defeating one of Group AA's top hurdlers in Tony Green of Louisa in the 110 meter hurdles with a sub 15 second clocking. (Photo by Brandon Miles)   Midlothian won many of the distance relays at Manchester, especially their boys taking first place in the 4x1600, 4x800, and DMR as well as the debut of their new middle distance talent in Skylar Evans for the girls, but the Maggie Walker girls had arguably the best performance of the meet in the distance events as their 4x1600 relay set a new meet record in a stellar time of 21:30 which equates to a 5:22 average per leg. With the 4x800 meter relays being held on Friday, MileStat.com has rushed to release its preview on the only running event finals for day one at the VHSL Group AAA State Indoor Championships. Seven girls' teams come into the state meet with times under 9:40 and several of these teams look to join top seeded West Potomac (9:27.13), who is looking to get over the hump and finally win a state title after contending for several years in a row. The first sub 8 minute 4x800 meter relay of the indoor season in Virginia might be produced at the Group AAA State Indoor Championships. Grassfield boys, anchored by 1000 US #2 performer Jeremy Greenwald with a 1:54 split, nearly broke the barrier at the Eastern Region Championships, but will be chased by a handful of other serious state title hopefuls. 

    Top 8 Virginia high school boys performers in each event this indoor season as of February 4th. While the Atlee boys and Atkinson twins did not get the opportunity to run on a fast banked track at Virginia Tech last weekend, it did not stop their 4x400 meter relay at the St. Christopher's Invitational from running a fast state leading time of 3:26.79. University of Oregon-bound Marques Atkinson (pictured above by Ryan Kelly) and St. Christopher's Invite 500 winner Michael Atkinson will get their crack at a rare opportunity to run a 500 meter on a fast banked track this weekend in the elite junior 500 field set within the New Balance Collegiate Games at the New York Armory. Their race is set for a 3:15 PM start on Saturday and you can watch their race via our MileSplit affiliate ArmoryTrack.com's live webcast throughout tthe meet.

Isaiah Simmons of Woodbridge earlier this winter competed in an All-Comers meet at the Prince George County Sports & Learning Complex and recorded a huge VA #2 all-time mark of 66'3.25" in the shot put. However, the performance was not verified with results until last week when results were posted on the Potomac Valley Track club website. Simmons further verified that performance with another big throw and this time in a sanctioned high school meet on Saturday at the St. Christopher's Invitational. The defending Group AAA state indoor and outdoor champion rocked the fieldhouse at St. Christopher's with a US #3 mark of 65'0.50".  His two big marks this indoor season put him in contention to become the greatest shot put thrower ever in Virginia High School history.   Atlee's Marques Atkinson regained his US #1 in the 500 which he lost earlier last week with another drop in time at St. Christopher's. Atkinson is knocking on the door of becoming a VA all-time top 25 performer in the event (1:04.43 cut-off) after his 1:04.83 performance in a quad meet at St. Chris this past Saturday.   Quite a historic meet for the Atlee pole vaulters and their vault coach Kyle Bishop with two of his athletes in Chris Pillow and Cameron Overstreet successfully clearing themselves as all-time greats in the event. Pillow's 16 foot clearance ties him for #3 all-time in Virginia high school state indoor history behind only Great Bridge High greats Mike Morrison and Lawrence Johnson, while Overstreet officially becomes the Virginia state indoor pole vault record holder with her personal best clearance of 12'9".   Read more...   Meet Results

  Desmonae Gray of Western Branch has yet to run in a 55 meter hurdles race this season, but no question that she is the best returning hurdler in the state as her junior year best 55 hurdles time of 8.10 puts her well ahead of the current state leading performance. These recruit rankings give the athletes more exposure and make it easier for college coaches and recruits to find who are some of the top high school athletes to try and attract to their school. Why not attempt something similar for track & field in Virginia? MileStat.com will be releasing their own top 10 rankings lists (possible expansion to larger lists) of the most prized recruits within the state of Virginia for each discipline of the sport (sprints, distance, hurdles, jumps, throws, pole vault). We will attempt to update our lists periodically throughout the year based on season performances and put together a class of 2012 rankings later this year.

Atlee pole vaulters Chris Pillow and Cameron Overstreet both achieved personal best clearances on Wednesday night at the Fork Union Mini Invite. Atlee senior Pillow, a third place finisher in both the Group AAA indoor and outdoor state meet last year, cleared a US #1 height of 15'3" at the Estes Athletic Center late into the evening. Earlier in the meet, Overstreet set off her own crowd roars and ovation after clearing 12'7" on her very first attempt to also maintain and improve her position on the national leaderboard.      Tony Green was the indoor triple jump state champion at Patrick Henry last year, but a family move now has Green at Louisa County competing in the Group AA classification. Green could become Group AA's most dominant all-around track athlete this year as complimenting his specialty of triple jump is a new personal best mark of 22'7" in the long jump at FUMA and winning a competitive 55 meter hurdles race with Atlee's Marques Atkinson (7.88) with a 7.84 clocking. Atkinson posted a solid 500 meter dash time later on the 160 meter unbanked track with a 1:07.85 performance, which was faster than his 1:07.90 win on CNU's 200 meter track this past Saturday.     The Atlee boys are one of the early front runners for the Group AAA state team titles with a nucleus of individual stars including pole vaulter Pillow, multi-eventer Atkinson, and short sprinter Trevor Ellie. Ellie has won three straight 55 meter dash races to open his season with his latest at Fork Union in a season best clocking of 6.48. The time of 6.48 ties Ellie with Oscar Smith's Joel Coleman as a state leader in the event.     Louisa County sophomore Javanique Burruss is one of the state's top returning long jumpers after nearly eclipsing 19 feet as a freshmen last year with a best leap of 18'11.50". She underperformed in the long jump at Fork Union with an 8th place finish, but did show her best performance ever in the hurdles with a 9.09 personal best victory in the 55 meter hurdles. King George senior Brittany Kersey was a state runner-up in the Group AA State Outdoor Championships last June after clearing 5'3" and has maintained her form at the start of the indoor season with another 5'3" clearance to pick up first place at Fork Union.   More to come from Fork Union including race videos and photos.   Fork Union Mini Invite #2 Complete Results   Race Videos by Brandon Miles (22 total) 

Many athletes from the past 2010 outdoor season rose high on the MileStat.com Era (December 200h through present day) All-Time Top 50 list. The list only includes FAT performances from invitational or championship meets. 2010 season performances on lists are highlighted in BOLD.   Long jump state record holder and IAAF World Juniors qualifier Justin Hunter of Ocean Lakes is ranked first in both the high jump and long jump as well as second in the triple jump. Darrell Wesh clocked the second fastest in the 100 meter dash behind Olympic 400 meter dash gold medalist Lashawn Merritt, while Isaiah Simmons and Kyle Fortney both earned #2 all-time marks in the throws.   Albemarle's Anthony Kostelac now sits third behind some all-time greats in the middle distance events with Alan Webb and Richard Smith in the 800 while ranked behind Webb and Bobby Lockhart in the 1600 meter run. Preview for the running events at the 2010 VHSL Group AA State Championships. Several races at this year's state meet will be historically some of the best ever in meet's history in terms of depth such as nine girls under 11 minutes in the 3200 meter run, six girls under 12 seconds in the 100 meter dash, and a large pack of boys relays ready to roll under 8 minutes in the 4x800 and 3:20 in the 4x400.  It has been seven years since the state meet was last held at Sports Backers Stadium and the ability for athletes to wear quarter inch spikes will not be the only factor to help potentially produce for many performances to rank among the fastest all-time in state meet history. Several athletes are capable of winning a pair of individual titles on the track including Darrell Wesh (pictured above by Ryan Kelly) in the boys 100 and 200 meter dash.

There is no question about it when reviewing the performance list for Saturday's running events at Sports Backers Stadium that the fast section of the boys 400 meter dash jumps out and off the sheet. All eight competitors have ran under 50 seconds to make for depth. There is the rivalry renewal between Taylor Sykes and Marques Atkinson to make for tension and excitement for the crowd. There is the often overlooked and sleepers in the field such as DeShawn Wilson to make for a potential darkhorse pick. Make sure you to stop by the concession stand and get your popcorn before this race!   There will be a lot of previews of the Central Region title contenders this weekend at Sports Backers, but a good number of out of area teams and athletes should produced some great performances in the elevated level of new competition.

The Blacksburg girls ran only a couple seconds off the outdoor state record with their 9:09.39 performance on Saturday at the Vince Bradford Relays in Lynchburg. In the same meet, the Nike Indoor Nationals 4xmile champion Blacksburg boys won the 4x1600 in 18:33 as well as dipped under 8 minutes in the 4x800 in 7:59.63. Atlee's Marques Atkinson ran a state leader in the 300 meter hurdles at 38.64 and Appomattox's Kenny Scott leaped to a #2 ranking in the state with his long jump mark of 22'6.25". A decent start to the outdoor season in Virginia this past weekend with some notable performances being recorded on Saturday as the rain cleared up and temperatures were not too cold. Top performances included a US #1 12:02 DMR by the Blacksburg girls (photo right by Paula Stevens) at the Battlefield Relays, who hold set the state record last year in 11:57.
