KINGS PARK, New York -- Aisling Cuffe continued her season of domination on Saturday at the Foot Locker Northeast Regional with a performance that surprised even herself. Facing relentless gusts of wind that reached speeds of 50 miles per hour and put Suffolk County on severe weather alert, Cuffe became the first girl in Sunken Meadow Park history to break 18 minutes.
In the immediate aftermath of the boys CHSAA Intersectional Championships, the result was too close to call between St. Anthony’s and Chaminade. Soaked from a day’s worth of steady rainfall, the teams huddled around the finish line and tried to figure out who beat who. Amidst the uncertainty each team’s body language could not have been more different. While St. Anthony’s exchanged high fives and congratulatory hugs, Chaminade’s body language told another story.
The only runner capable of challenging Joe Rosa's pursuit of yet another meet record on Saturday was family. Bearing identical blue singlets and shocks of red hair, Rosa and twin brother Jim, juniors from West Windsor Plainsboro North, were indistinguishable as they surged stride-for-stride into Van Cortlandt Park's back hills on Saturday at the Manhattan Invitational.
If cold weather bothers Solomon Haile, it didn't appear to affect him yesterday in New York City and should bode well for his chances in San Diego.
All that separated three close friends from finishing 1-2-3 in the Footlocker Northeast Regional meet was a rookie barely old enough to drive.
